NLP can change your life. It has changed the lives of countless thousands of people for the better. From improved relationships, greater confidence and peace in daily life to attracting more wealth, business opportunities and greater health, NLP has a proven track record of results. And results matter.

NLP was developed in the 1970s, but has been greatly refined over the last 35 years or so, and is now a major technique in therapy and self-development. It has uses in business, education, the military and, most importantly for us, can be very successfully applied to personal life.

NLP refers to:

  • neuro – the brain and nervous system
  • linguistic – the language (verbal and non verbal) we use to communicate
  • programming – the way language and thought go together to produce behaviour.

Usually, people are on ‘autopilot,’ responding to external stimuli in an automatic way, driven by subconscious impulses which have been learned and practiced, often over many years. NLP gives you a way of taking control – getting into the driving seat and putting your hands back on the steering wheel instead of being a passenger.

Sometimes, successful people are thought of as being ‘lucky’ and unsuccessful people as ‘unlucky.’ Very often, however, success is down to the way people think. The people who developed NLP were interested in the differences in thought patterns between successful and unsuccessful people, and what they found was the basis of the NLP used today. Luck has little to do with success – you can choose to be in control.

NLP explores the relationships between how we think (neuro), how we communicate (linguistic) and our patterns of behaviour and emotion (programmes).

More specifically, NLP is all about the way that objects and situations are mentally represented by individuals. Take a simple example which NLP is often used to address – a phobia. People with phobias often ‘see’ the object of their phobia (such as a spider, a snake or whatever) in a completely disproportionate way – when they project an image of the object onto their mental screen, it might be disproportionately large or close, some features of it may be magnified or overly colourful. There might be odd, loud or frightening sounds attached to the image, and so on.

A person with no phobia for the object will project a completely different mental image and, by finding out about this ‘normal’ image, the phobic person can be taught to project the image in a new way. NLP is remarkably successful at treating phobias in a very short time (about 30 minutes). Years of therapy and hypnosis are not required!

NLP is very practical – it is all about what works, and a huge toolkit of effective techniques has been developed over the years to address all kinds of issues. As well as phobias, examples include:

  • Improving communication
  • Overcoming fears such as those of public speaking
  • Becoming more healthy
  • Improving self esteem and confidence
  • Relieving boredom

By learning to recast the images we carry around in our heads, life can be magically transformed. NLP is a way of taking back control and orchestrating the life you choose, not just leaving things to chance.
